Remaining overs = remaining legal balls ÷ 6.
The range applies ±20% to the rate over the remaining overs. That is a presentational device, not a statistical confidence interval — it exists to stop a single number being read as a forecast.
Straight-line projection assumes the current rate continues, and in limited-overs cricket it usually does not. Scoring accelerates at the death and collapses when wickets fall, and neither is captured by extrapolating a rate.
Below five overs the calculator marks the projection as unreliable. Three overs for 30 projects 200 in a T20; almost no innings that starts that way finishes there.
Wickets in hand matter as much as the rate, and this projection does not use them. A side 90 for 1 and a side 90 for 7 project identically and will not finish anywhere near each other. For a model that does account for wickets, see how win probability is computed.
